About Meg R.
I chose to support this team in honor of my I Run 4 buddy, Hylan, who was born with Down syndrome in April 2014. Hylan and I were matched in the I Run 4 program in November of 2015, and in the year we've been buddies I have been so lucky to be a part of his family. Now I dedicate all of my miles, races and adventures to him - just as he works hard in all of his daily routines to grow and learn. He inspires me to be my best, work hard and set challenging goals. Hylan participates in many therapies and activities to help in his developmental progress, and I know that one day he may be able to take advantage of the programs that Opportunity Knocks has to offer. Hylan and his family live in Illinois and I know that with your contributions, OK will continue to provide programs that Hylan will one day be able to access himself. I am excited to support this organization as I run the 2017 Chicago Marathon.
A little about Opportunity Knocks: their mission is dedicated to providing opportunities and resources for individuals with developmental disabilities so they may pursue their educational, occupational and social interests. OK was founded in 2009 and launched their very first program on February 22, 2010. They've grown tremendously in the few years they've been around and now offer several programs for our participants, who are affectionately called Warriors!
Some of the OK programs:
After Opps - an after school/work program for individuals ages 14 and up, with social and recreational activities.
The Life Shop - a day program for young adults ages 22 and older that focuses on independent living skills, vocation, health & wellness, and community integration.
Workout Warriors - a health and wellness program that promotes physical activity and healthy living! Through their health and wellness programming they also host a weekly Walk to Run Club in the summer months!
Knockout Pickles - OK recently launched a social enterprise in which the Warriors have become paid employees of OK making pickles that they sell to local restaurants and at fundraising events.
You can see why this organization stood out to me as one that I wanted to support for this big event. I feel so fortunate to be a member of this team for the 2017 Chicago Marathon, and I hope that you'll join me in supporting these incredible programs. One day Hylan will be a Warrior, too - and it means the world to me to support programs that are right in his community.
